Notes:

Erwin was born in Michael Reese hospital at the time his parents were
living at Newberry
& Maxwell Sts. When Erwin was a child his family moved to 1102 S. Wood
St. near Yeaton which is now Grenshaw Ave. upstairs of Cohen's Grocery.
His family had a three bedroom apartment which was always active as by
now Erwin had a younger brother Albert, who later was a grocery
salesman, and five older sisters. While living there he watched the
County Hospital and the Ladies Aide Society Buildings being constructed.
His father, Zelick was a peddler in the US and at times would be gone
for a month or 2 going as far as the MIssissippi River. Some of the
people would pay him with geese, other fowl and eggs. The fowl scared
the daylights out of Erwin. His mother and sisters used to pluck the
geese and saved the feathers for making pillows.
Erwin recalled that when he was 4 he fell asleep under a gas range
that had a shelf. Everyone called it a Polly stove but it was actually a
Parlor stove. At that time the family took coal from outside, from a
shed and brought it upstairs to heat the apartment in a stove that had
Isenglass. When he was 6 his favorite game was Peg and Stick. He cut
off a stick from a broom about 8" long and sharpened both ends. He also
had a stick 3' long which he used to hit the shorter stick to see how
far it would go. He also had a favorite top.
The family took in boarders when Erwin was 5 or 6 years old and they
had their own private entrances. Once a year the family made their
years supply of wine.
When Erwin was 8 (1918), his mother died from the flu epidemic which
spread through Chicago. (Her sister in law Rose also died at this time).
His father, Zelik, was a religious man, and Erwin went with him to
Mincha and Maariv services. Not being to anxious to attend, many times
he told his father services hadn't started and in the end his father
gave him the dickens. He chased him to go to Hebrew School and at 13 he
was Bar Mitzvah.
When the family moved from Wood St.

Erwin married LURIE Mollie 29 Nov 1931, Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois. Mollie (daughter of LURIE Samuel and SIPPERSTEIN Gussie) was born 22 May 1914, Chicago, Illinois; died 14 Sep 2002, Ann Arbor, Michigan; was buried , Westlawn, Chicago, Illinois. [Group Sheet]

Mollie is named after her paternal grandmother.

Notes:

Zelik was a peddler when he came to the US. Eventually he owned a candy
store, cleaner, and grocery.

Zelik married LIPKIN Lena Deena Oct 1896, New York, New York. Lena (daughter of LIPKIN Isaac and NEIMAN Chane Rivka) was born 1877, Wollamer, Latvia; died 24 Feb 1919, Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois; was buried , ,Chicago, Illinois. [Group Sheet]

Notes:

Some stories have it that Leah Deena was born and lived in Riga, Latvia
(although I have yet to find a source for Isaac Lipkin moving to Riga.)
It was not uncommon at that time for young children to be boarded out.
Leah Deena went to the Isaacson house as a nurse girl to little Rose
Isaacson, who was not a well child. There she met Zelik Isaacson, her
future husband. There story is recorded on the marraige notes. She
came to America to be with Zelik. Rose accompanied her to America as a
condition of her being allowed to marry Zelik. Leah Dina had cousins
living in Boston at the time and when they heaard she was in Chicago
they came to see her. One of the cousins was Sam Rubinowitz and he fell
in love with Rose and they got married. Leah Dina died when Erwin was 8
years old, from the flu epidemic which spread through Chicago.
Ironically her sister-in-law Rose, also died from the flu at this time.

Notes:

Sailed on the SS Carmania with his sister Devira on August 27, 1907 from Liverpool, England and arrived at Ellis Island on September 4. His name was listed as Schoel Lurie. 22 yars old. Laborer, address of father Abraham listed. Devira was listed as 16 years old. Last residence appears to be "Drissa."

Samuel married SIPPERSTEIN Gussie. Gussie (daughter of SIPPERSTEIN Avraham Yitchak and ? Chia Fagel) was born 15 Apr 1895, Pinsk, Russia; died 29 Apr 1964, Chicago, Illinois; was buried Apr 1964, Westlawn, Chicago, Illinois. [Group Sheet]
